Hello again neighbors,

A total 25,911 voters turned out at the polls for the primary election in Alamance County. My spouse and I were among them!

There are a total 118,791 registered voters here, so a 21.8% turnout might not sound like much, but compared to previous midterms, there's no denying that turnout has grown.

In 2022, 16.70%, or 18,559 out of 111,152, ballots were cast in the midterm. In 2018, the percentage dipped to 13.20%(13,186 out of 99,895) from 13.72% in 2014. That year, only 12,902 out of 94,061 total ballots were cast, according to NCSBE records.

As promised, here’s a quick roundup of where the primary races stand as of this morning:

U.S. Senate

U.S. House of Representatives District 9

  • Democratic Winner: Richard Ojeda

  • Republican Incumbent: Rep. Richard Hudson

    • This race was not on the Republican ballot and Rep. Hudson did not face a primary challenger.

NC Court of Appeals Seat 1

  • Democratic Incumbent: Judge John Arrowood

    • This race was not on the Democratic ballot and Judge Arrowood did not face a primary challenger.
  • Republican Winner: Michael Byrne

NC Court of Appeals Seat 3

Alamance County Board of Commissioners

Alamance County Sheriff

  • Republican Winner: Terry Johnson

    • This race was not on the Democratic ballot. However, Shannon Long, an unaffiliated candidate, recently shared he gathered enough signatures to get on the November ballot. If the signatures are counted and verified by the state,  Long will face Johnson in the general election.

Alamance County Clerk of Superior Court

  • Republican Winner: Kristie Culler

    • This race was not on the Democratic ballot and Culler won't face a challenger in November.
